So my theory about writer's block...

Got writer's block? No problem! Here's the formula for writing a novel:

■ think of a message
■ think of an ideal situation or problem for conveying that message
■ determine the best time period and setting for that problem
■ create the most interesting characters to address that problem
■ write the book

Why does message come first? Because every book says something whether the author intends it to or not, and if you the writer don't consciously choose the message, then the message most often conveyed is this book is dumb.

Among other things, these books say this:

Jane Eyre: you can overcome your past and find happiness
Les Misérables: poverty turns good people into criminals
Animal Farm: power results in corruption and oppression
1984: totalitarianism is closer than you think
Anna Karenina: selfishness leads to ruin
The Great Gatsby: you can't buy love

So what does your book say? If it says nothing of significance, that's probably why you're blocked. Creating a message for your book might help overcome your writer's block. (੭*ˊᵕˋ)੭* ̀ˋ
