Finished the first draft of book. Woohoo! Now for editing this monster. Argh. (ノ_<、)ヾ(´▽`)
■ Message:
● two steps to end racism─one practical, one emotional:
● racism, sexism, homophobia, plague, poverty, homelessness, war, etc. are all symptoms of one disease
● no such thing as sustainable growth since growth cannot be sustained indefinitely. Society should pursue balance instead...
■ Themes:
● aging
● overpopulation denial
● gluttony of all sorts in a universe of limitations
● grief and loss...how do you go on when you've lost everything?
● domination: the Imperians want to dominate the planet and take dominion of everything...they insist the Bible tells them to. The Eudonians, conversely, believe in equality and equity, not domination...
● the inherent corruption of the military-industrial-political complex
● brainwashing in society...every society puts emphasis in subtle ways on the things it wants its people to believe...in the school system, in the media, etc. Hence the reason some societies might think conspicuous consumption is a good thing, and why other societies might reward moderation in all things...
● capitalism is not evil and socialism is not good...the overpopulation that accompanies them makes them evil
● industrialization isn't inherently evil and an agrarian society isn't necessarily good; what's evil is the failure to accommodate rising technology
● getting home to safety...when are you truly safe from other people?
● placing blame for societal problems
● media bias
● true purpose of the news media is to make money, not to inform the public
● what is utopian to one person can be dystopian to another
● environmental destruction is caused by human activity, so why isn't that being addressed?
● The ethics of social engineering to prevent poverty and environmental destruction, or just letting them run their course ─ when is it beneficial and when is it oppressive?
● people sabotaging others with their behavior ─ as Sartre said: hell is other people
