Um, okay, so the Shy Girl kerfuffle...

Two things stand out that are maybe neither here nor there, but are on my mind anyhow:

• the controversy about whether it's AI or not

You'd think we could recognize human vs. machine writing by now, but then I remember how so many people fill out forms, write business reports and other paperwork the same way they write tweets. Whole generations have grown up texting, with poor spelling and grammar reinforced to them everyday. An embarrassing number can't spell for shit and honestly don't know the difference between their, they're or there and stuff like that.

Now imagine what it'll be like when whole generations grow up using AI to do their homework for them. AI writing will become ingrained the same way, and all the writing in the future will sound like AI even when it's not. People simply won't know any better. (♯^.^ღ)

• the plot is so damn familiar

Years ago I read an anthology of gay short stories. Can't remember the title ─ maybe it was A Century of Gay Erotica ? Wish I could remember!

Anywhoo, one of the stories was about a weirdass mountain man who lives alone in a cabin in the woods. Somehow a young dude ends up at the cabin. Maybe his car breaks down? And when the young dude asks for help, the mountain man forces him to become his dog. He's not allowed to wear clothes or get on the furniture and has to eat out of a bowl on the floor. U。・ェ・。U

Maybe the author of Shy Girl never read this gay anthology. Like they say, there are no new stories anymore, and it's not unusual for two or more people to come up with the very same plot independently of one another. And even if she did read it, Shy Girl is a heterosexual variation and yeah, you can't copyright plots.

But it's just interesting to me that this is a recycled premise originally written by someone else. ¯\_(ﭢ)_/¯
