It seems to be the one aspect of the story no one wants to touch. The conversation always turns to guns, never to causes. Taking their guns away is the first step, and an important step, but it's not the only step. The troubled kid is still there, looking for another way to make a statement. And there are plenty of other mediums: superacids, flamethrowers, crossbows, bangsticks, spearguns, cattle prods, nail bombs, flare guns, grain dust, poison gas. Damn near anything is available on the internet these days, including the materials and instructions for nuclear weapons.
We need to start talking about the troubled kids, where they come from, who's creating them, how they're creating them, how to stop their creation. Their number seems to be increasing on this overpopulated planet of limited resources and limited opportunities, and things are going to get radically worse soon when the robotics industry puts many of those people out of work. We need to start fearing these kids, not just their weapons.
